The truth you don’t want to hear (but need to) about your home design project.
Quick Fix Temptation
You want the problem gone, now. You’re past the point of caring what it’ll cost - in fact you’re (almost) happy to throw money at it for it to go away. There are so many moving parts to manage, events, travels, not to mention rent - you can't wait for your home to be ready. You have that burning desire for immediate gratification, and even though there’s that small voice in you that knows better, you want to settle for a quick fix.
And, there are tons of options out there - digital design tools, retailers providing full furniture selections, online moodboards, and AR apps. Surely it’s all very straightforward and shouldn’t take too long… right?
Sometimes, people react by going to a furniture shop and just buying everything from there. Others start by buying a couple of key pieces - a sofa, dining table - to get things going… before getting stuck. Frustration and stress pile up (as do the home arguments with your significant other), your space starts to look disjointed, and far from feeling anything like home.
Take a breath. Read on.
Strategy Over Speed.
Bite the bullet - and take the time to create a cohesive design vision for your home.
This may feel like it takes time you don’t have; but those extra couple of weeks can be the difference between a host of issues that can arise, causing even more delays - not to mention stress (who needs more of that) - and an amazing haven you’ll love returning home to.
When it comes to planning, there’s a ton of research across industries that affirms the importance of a good plan, backed by data indicating that better planning correlates to higher satisfaction and success rates. Perhaps counterintuitively, planning helps you to be adaptable when unexpected changes arise. I see it as a game of tetris, where you know what pieces you have and you need to maneuver them into place. If you don’t know the pieces - well, good luck ;)
What You Need to Do
The first step to realise an actionable vision is to get super clear on your core values and lifestyle. This is your ‘true North’, all paths of your design project should lead you there.
Then, you want to get some key pieces in place: a moodboard - a collection of images to show the design direction you’re after - a layout, to give you an idea of the sizes of the furniture you’ll need and how they fit into your space - and a shopping list of every item so you have a systematic ‘to-do’ list and a clear understanding of your budget.
Factor in the time (or preferably budget for a designer - which will save you time) to allow for a cohesive plan for your space.
In a Nutshell
Spending the time at the beginning of your home design project will set a compass for all the decisions you’ll need to make and will actually save you time and stress.
It’ll play a pivotal role in alleviating overwhelm, pressure, worry, and all associated arguments with loved ones, leading you to a home you feel proud of, that feels authentic and representative of who you are.
